The Grade I listed Sir John Moore School building.
Built and designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1697
The Foundation is a registered charity (Registered Charity Number 510484) and has been in existence since 1697.
Sir John Moore was a local entrepreneur who became Lord Mayor of London. He commissioned Christopher Wren to create a school for his local village. See more of the history of the building on the village website http://www.applebymagna.org.uk/appleby_history/history_tour_school.html
A major renovation was completed in 2004 and the Trust is responsible for the management and maintenance of the Grade I listed building, providing a home for the local primary school. Community access to the site is enhanced through a variety of cultural, leisure and educational events. These include; the Sir John Moore Heritage Centre - featuring a permenant exhibition of the school as it was in 1891 in the original dormitories; local exhibitions in the Community Gallery; scrap books and virtual access via the stables interactive reception; theatre and music events in the hall and the cellar; regular community activities - from zumba dance to youth club and much more!
The trustees raise funds through renting out office space and apartments, alongside encouraging the use of the site for private functions. All the income from functions, whether weddings, parties or coporate events, goes back into the charity to develop its community provision or care for the Grade 1 Listed building.
The charity also raises funds for specific projects through grants. This year the Charity has been successful in obtaining grants from a number of sources and the trustees would like to thank all the funders. Including:
Appleby Magna Parish Council, Big Lottery Fund, Leche Foundation, The Pilgrim Trust, Find Your Talent, ESF, North West Leicestershire District Council, Leicestershire Councty Council, MLA East Midlands, Rennaissance East Midlands,
Winners - We are proud to announce that the Foundation won the Inspirational Award for Best Special Project - Creation of the Cellar, and Museum of the Year at the annual Leicestershire and Rutland Heritage Awards. Thankyou to all our staff, volunteers & supporters. "The Foundation shows what can be achieved on limited resources, enthusiasm and committment" judges comment.
