Informal portrait of Sir John Moore, from the Moore family archive. Painted during his lifetime with an equivalent portrait of his wife. Artist unknown.
Unlike the formal portraits this is a much more personal view. John Moore was born in Norton juxta Twycross (close to Appleby) in 1620. He was married to Mary Maddox but they had no children. He died in 1702 in London, where he had spent all his adult life. Much of his assets went to philanthropic projects, but his nephews also benefitted.
